Quantity Not Quality or Mere Scribbles

July 31st, 2008

The way I write in journals is a bit scattered and slapdash but I do it almost religiously and I guess that’s the point. I have kept some sort of journal for almost all of my adult life. Since before high school for sure. I have always tried to document every single day of my life in some way or another and my daily documentation almost invariably comes in one of these forms: Continue reading »

The Gorilla Is For Sand Racing

A while ago, maybe a few years ago so even, I first heard a track by Cadence Weapon and I kept playing the thing on a constant loop.

SASI

July 20th, 2008

Spent yesterday morning out at the Sonoran Arthropod Studies Institute helping prepare materials for their upcoming Invertebrates in Education and Conservation Conference. [This is all way more fun than it sounds. I promise.]

It’s very lovely out there.

If you like being out in the desert and looking at lab rooms full of ant colonies and weird bugs creatures of all sorts then you really should go out there sometime. It’s awesome.

I’m Just All Swoony Lately

July 16th, 2008

It happens a lot with me where I get all moved to tears about damned near everything and I'm just sort of laid flat by the happiness and goodness in my life.

Movie scene: Imagine some coal miner wife in West Virginia somewhere waiting and pacing in her kitchen for news about her almost certainly dead husband that got trapped when the mine he worked in collapsed. She's not crying or anything and is just sort of dazed and distant and resigned to ride the thing through until the end. All hope seems lost and the neighbors are whispering to one another that surely he must be dead by now after all of this time trapped down there underground. But miracle of miracles! He's not dead and makes it out safe enough and returns home to his family.

It's only after all of the trauma and waiting and hurting that the wife endured is over that she just breaks down. She starts bawling about how much she loves her coal mining husband and all of the rest.

I think I really understand scenarios like that. Where after what seems like impossible circumstances and tremendous loss have prevailed for such a great long while in your life that when they finally break off and fall away it becomes impossible to not feel blown away by how life can be on the other side of that. It's all walking on tippy-toes, baby. Like giant cranes, no less.

[You know what I mean?]

Anyway, I'm just pretty happy in my life right now. And I just might be one of the luckiest people I've ever known. No kidding.

My Best Birthday Love

July 10th, 2008

Lisa was my first true love and my high school sweetheart and one of the smartest, coolest, bravest and kindest people that I've ever, ever known. Since we first met I've never not had a perpetual crush on her and I'm seriously lucky to be able to count her amongst my friends. [My oldest friend, even*.]

Happy Birthday, ! [I send you my very best love and my very best wishes for you on your birthday.]

* Not to imply that she is old but more to say that she is, perhaps, the person that I have known the longest and still consider a close friend. Besides, 27 is not that old anyway.

Seriously. I almost could care less what someone looks like.

Fatlip

July 7th, 2008

Downloading some of my favorite driving songs since I've been spending a fair amount of time in car lately and I have been listening to a lot of Fatlip. When 'What's Up, Fatlip?' came out I was so into the song and later when he released 'The Loneliest Punk' I listened to it on a near loop. Spike Jonze later did the video for 'What's Up, Fatlip?' and also did a little short documentary about him.

Anyway.

If you don't know Fatlip you should check him out.

I woke up late the other morning and knowing that I’d be late for work I hurried and called in to ask if I could bring anything for the 4th of July party they were having. I convinced them that they’d probably need more potato chips because everyone always needs more potato chips and I’d be a little late since I would have to stop off first for the aforementioned chips. And that bought me some time. So I get to work and realize that a lot of people are seriously casually dressed and a lot more people were noticeably absent. I found out then that if you have been there for more than three months then you got the day off if you wanted and if you didn’t have the day off then you were paid time and a half for the hours you did work. So work I did!
