McHenry Ephemera

So I'll add newspaper scans, articles, death & birth certificates and whatever else that I've scanned but isn't technically a photograph. A good portion of this is sad to me.

It's been said that God made liquor so that the Irish wouldn't rule the world. And then they go and make their own.

Obituary for my Great Grandfather Connie Powers. Connie Powers Obituary

It's from what I gather is a Tennessee newspaper since it mentions Obion County. I have always thought that it was cool that Constance/Connie was a mans name and I also think it's cool that he named his daughter [my Grandma] the same thing. It's been said that they chose Cornelius as a name for my uncle based on the possibility of being able to call him Connie too. Regardless, I wonder where they chose the name from if not for another ancestor of ours. Because that's what Irish people do, I guess. They keep sticking with the same names that the people before them chose. That's why there are so many people named Thomas, William, Andrew, Ann and Mary in my family tree. [So what's up with the other Cornelius then?]

Obituary for my Grandfather
Alphonsus Andrew McHenry II

This one was sent to me by my mom since she knew I was putting this site together. When we talked about it she still couldn't help crying to read it and it is very sad for sure. She also seems to be completely convinced that the mention of him having a brother named Thomas just has got to be some error. She swears it's not true and I personally am far from convinced. [There are even some extra Thomas' around St. Louis and I just can't make them fit yet. But we'll see.]

Missouri State Board of Health -Bureau of Vital Statistics:
Official Certificates of Death

So these are really great to have access to and they are interesting and helpful and confusing as anything. These official documents have generated way more questions than they have answers. I'm still wondering about some of the information in these. Still, they are what they are and at least I have them as references.

Who is Jerome McHenry?

One of the most interesting things I've found so far is this unknown child of William Thomas McHenry. There is a birth record from Nov. 10, 1905 and the baby is named Jerome McHenry and the father is a William Thomas McHenry. In 1905 William would have been about 26 or so. The mother is listed as Laura Magromen and I thought that wasn't a real name because it's odd but there are some around. But no trace of her or Jerome. [So far.] But the kicker is the address. It's 3932 Evans.

The birth record for Jerome is below:

1900 US Census

The address 3932 Evans comes up again in the 1900 US Census. This is the residence of Thomas, Matilda, William and Alphonsus McHenry. This time they are listed as owners of this house and the years prior they were renting other places. A detail from that census is below and is interesting for a couple of reasons. The first is that it lists Thomas as actually being born at sea. It also states that he was born in New York so I can only assume he was born on the passenger liner coming from Ireland with his father. [Not sure exactly.] It states that Matilda had 4 total children and 2 are living. This accounts for Agnes and Genevieve who both died at 10 and 4 from diphtheria and are now buried with their parents in the same exact plot at Calvary Cemetery. [A list of everyone buried in plot #0435 is HERE.]

3932 Evans Avenue

[Additional detail of the same page that shows the address is 3932 Evans the same exact address listed on Jerome McHenry's birth record that lists the father as William Thomas McHenry.]

Okay. Check out the bottom left side of this detail from the same page from this 1900 Census. What street is that? It's Evans and Easton listed there. Easton is the street that's listed on Thomas and Ida's death certificates as their residence. Did Evans turn into Easton? I'm confused.

[Update: St. Louis Street Names info from the STL Library: EASTON AVENUE (E-W). Honored Rufus Easton, who was named St. Louis' first postmaster in 1805. He also served as Missouri's first attorney general and gained recognition as one of the leading lawyers of his day. The name Easton still occasionally appears on city street maps although Easton Avenue is now known as Dr. Martin Luther King Drive. (Old North St. Louis-Yeatman)

EVANS AVENUE (E-W). East of Grand Avenue, Evans originated in Old North St. Louis-Yeatman, as a street in Daniel D. Page's Third Western Addition to St. Louis of 1855, honoring A.H. Evans, landowner and developer of Evans Place subdivision in U.S. Survey 1461. West of Grand it had its beginning in Grand Prairie as the principal street in the Evans Place subdivision, a 12-block development north of Page between Prairie and Taylor Avenues dedicated to urban settlement by David F. Evans and Montgomery Blair in 1872. Between Deer Street and Marcus Avenue, the street's name was changed from Lewis Avenue to Evans Avenue in 1881. (Grand Prairie) (Old North St. Louis-Yeatman) More info is HERE.

And now that we know that Easton is actually Dr. Martin Luther King Blvd. then we know that Easton and Evans run parallel. So I'm more confused.

[Still doesn't explain much.]

1880 US Census

From the 1880 US Census is Thomas, Matilda and Agnes all together. This proves my theory of Matilda having other children. Agnes is just 3 years old. Thomas is 30 and Matilda is 26. Thomas' age lines up with a birth year of 1851 or so making the death certificate date closer to being the winner. We'll see.

And another one from June 1, 1880. This one places Thomas, Matilda, Agnes and her new brother Willie together. Willie, of course, is William Thomas McHenry, my Great, Great Grandfather. He is just 1 year old.

The whole thing is huge but it's here if you want to click on it:

[Seriously. It's giant.]
